The Solar System

The Twentieth Century Atlas of Popular Astronomy

Since first I saw solar system plates from The Twentieth Century Atlas of Popular Astronomy (1908), by Thomas Heath BA (1861-1940), I fell in love. I immediately knew that I had to make an animation from these graphics.

I wanted to recreate the final look as much as possible. I spent dozens of hours of cutting out all the elements. Small arrows, satellites, planets and typography. Everything preserved as per the original drawn with ink.

The most complicated part was to recreate the Earth from 'The Seasons, Tides' plate. I wanted to show Earth's rotation. I had to paint over the Earth's grid with the continents, and retaining the original shading with thin lines.
